Treasure Island and St. Pete Beach sit right next to each other on the same string of barrier islands, and visitors often can't tell them apart on a map. But as someone who lives out here, I can tell you they feel different — and which one you'll love depends on the kind of trip you want.
Treasure Island: wider, calmer, more of a neighborhood
Treasure Island has one of the widest beaches in the whole Tampa Bay area — three miles of soft, gently sloping sand where it never feels shoulder-to-shoulder. It's quieter, more residential and more family-friendly. This is where I'd stay if you want space to spread out, calm water for kids, and a slower pace — with John's Pass and its restaurants just a few minutes north.
St. Pete Beach: livelier, with big-resort energy
St. Pete Beach, just to the south, is the more famous and more energetic of the two. It regularly lands on 'best beaches in America' lists, and it's lined with resorts, beach bars and the historic pink Don CeSar hotel. It's a bit busier and more polished, with more nightlife and walk-to dining. If you want buzz, resort amenities nearby and a classic Florida-beach scene, this is your side.
How I'd actually choose
Traveling with young kids, a big group, or just craving a quiet reset? Treasure Island. Want a lively, walkable beach-town vibe with more restaurants and bars a short stroll away? St. Pete Beach. The good news: they're barely 10 minutes apart, so wherever you stay, you can easily spend a day on the other. Most of our homes are on and around Treasure Island — the calmer end of this coast.
