Wintering on the Gulf Coast: A Snowbird's Local Guide

Every winter, our beaches fill with happy northerners and Canadians escaping the cold, and I completely understand why. Winter on the Gulf Coast is one of the best-kept secrets of the year. If you're thinking about a longer stay, here's the honest local picture.

The weather trade you're making

From roughly December through March, our days are mild and dry — often in the 60s to mid-70s°F with lots of sunshine. It's sweater-in-the-morning, t-shirt-by-noon weather. The Gulf itself is cooler in winter, so it's less about long swims and more about beach walks, biking, golf and sitting on the deck in January while the rest of the country shovels snow.

Why it's snowbird season

January through March is peak snowbird season here, and the town has a lovely, social rhythm to it — farmers' markets, live music, active mornings on the beach, and plenty of company. It's also our busiest and most in-demand stretch for longer rentals, so if you want a month or a season in one of our homes, book well ahead.

Settling in for a longer stay

A big part of the snowbird appeal is living like a local, not a tourist. A home with a full kitchen, laundry and a comfortable deck beats a hotel room for weeks at a time, and you'll quickly find your own routine — a morning beach walk, a favorite coffee spot, sunset at Caddy's. Many of our guests come for a couple of weeks and end up asking about next winter before they've even left.
