Our summer storms usually blow through in an hour, but every trip runs into the occasional grey day. Good news: some of the best things to do around here have nothing to do with the beach. Here's where I head when the weather turns.
Head into downtown St. Petersburg
Downtown St. Pete, about 20–25 minutes away, is my go-to rainy-day plan. The Salvador Dalí Museum holds one of the largest collections of his work anywhere, the Museum of Fine Arts is excellent, and the whole downtown is walkable between galleries, cafés and shops. It's a genuinely great art city that most beach visitors underestimate.
The mural district and indoor markets
St. Pete's mural district turns the city into an open-air gallery — dozens of huge, colorful murals you can wander between when the rain lets up. Pair it with the local shops, coffee roasters and craft breweries that fill the area. It's the kind of afternoon that ends up being a highlight rather than a consolation prize.
Closer to home
If you'd rather not drive far, John's Pass Village has covered boardwalk shopping and waterfront restaurants where you can watch the rain over the water with a grouper sandwich. And honestly? A big rental home with a movie, a board game and a covered deck makes a rainy Gulf Coast afternoon feel like a treat, not a wash-out.
